LipiFlow® (for Dry Eye)

What is Dry Eye?

Your eyes produce the “right” type of tears, or tear film, in order to remain healthy and comfortable. Sometimes, a person’s eyes stop producing these tears, resulting in something called “dry eye”.

Did you know that in the United States dry eye is a common condition, most often affecting people who are middle-aged and older? In fact, it is estimated that 4.88 million Americans from 50 and older have dry eyes.

Dry eye has a variety of symptoms, including burning, redness, foreign body sensation and even fluctuating blurring of vision.

LipiFlow System

The LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System is a drug-free mechanism of action that uses a console and a single-use sterile device, known as the Activator. The procedure uses the Vector Thermal Pulse Technology™(VTP). This system applies heat and peristaltic motion to the eyelid with the effect of removing gland obstructions and stagnant gland content. The end result is a more constant flow of tears to your eye.

How the LipiFlow System Works:

  • There is an initial anesthetic drop, whereafter no drugs are required for the procedure.
  • The LipiFlow system then administers therapeutic energies to the meibomian glands. This stimulates tears, while safeguarding the structure of your eye.
  • The result is that the obstructed meibum is liquefied, pushed up and removed from your eye.
